Steinfeld's last release before the break was "SunKissing," in March 2023. Then, for more than a year: nothing new.

She didn't announce the pause with a press release. She used her BEAU SOCIETY newsletter, in August 2024, and wrote that she'd been losing herself "trying to chase that viral moment vs. really creating, connecting, and growing."

In that same newsletter, she opened up about anxiety. She described how she used to "let it eat me alive." She said she now has "a better understanding of what anxiety is and what it feels like in my body."

She later called the decision "a very difficult decision to make." She said she wanted to focus on acting.

What pulled Steinfeld back to recording wasn't a label deadline. It was a character.

In Sinners, she plays Mary, a woman who uses music as her "home" and "safe space" after losing her mother. Steinfeld said that storyline mirrored her own reconnection to music. She called the film "so driven and moved by music."

"Dangerous" was released on April 18, 2025. She co-wrote it with Ludwig Göransson, an Academy Award-winning composer, and with songwriter Sarah Aarons.
