Where Does the Wu-Tang 7th Chamber Sample Come From?

RZA produced the track. According to WhoSampled, its drums come from a 1970 Lonnie Smith record.

That's the backbone of the beat. It's a good reason to listen again with headphones.

There's also a follow-up, "Wu-Tang: 7th Chamber - Part II," which has its own official audio upload.

What Does Wu-Tang 7th Chamber Mean? Origins and Lyrics

The "chamber" idea comes from kung fu movies. The album's name borrows from the 1978 film The 36th Chamber of Shaolin and from the Bruce Lee film Enter the Dragon.

In The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, training is a series of physical and mental tests. Wu-Tang took that setup and aimed it at rap.

Where Did the Title "7th Chamber" Come From?

Sotheby's has described RZA's handwritten planning notes for the album. In them, a track called "Run Ya Garments (16th Chamber)" is replaced by "Wu-Tang: 7th Chamber."

That suggests the chamber names were part of the plan early on.

What Are the Wu-Tang 7th Chamber Lyrics About?

The group hasn't published an official explanation of this song. What follows is our reading of the lyrics, not a confirmed meaning.

The Skit: A Missing Tape and a Shooting

The song opens with a skit, not a verse. Two friends argue over a lost "Killer tape" that one of them lent out. Then someone bangs on the door with news that a friend named Shameek was shot twice.

The skit swings from a petty fight to a possible death in under a minute. Then one voice goes back to worrying about the tape. We read that as dark humor about street life, where small and serious things sit side by side.

The Verses: Kung Fu Talk With Street Edge

After a "Good Morning Vietnam" shout, the rappers take over. The verses mostly show off skill. They brag about hard beats, sharp rhymes and winning any mic battle.

The Wu-Tang sword shows up more than once as a stand-in for the group's rap style. The lyrics also use plenty of violent imagery, like body bags and prison. We read that as boasting in the style of the time, not as a story. They also name-check each other, including Inspectah Deck, Ghostface and Ol' Dirty Bastard.

One line, "Protect Ya Neck," points to the group's own earlier single.

The Bigger Picture

The Shaolin imagery on the album stands in for Staten Island, New York, where the group formed. So the kung fu talk is partly a way to talk about home. Put together, the skit and verses show two sides of the same world: real danger on the street, and the fantasy of a warrior who comes out on top.

A Quick Word on Wu-Tang Clan

Wu-Tang Clan put out Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) as their debut on November 9, 1993. "7th Chamber" sits on that first record, and it runs over 6 minutes.

The song has kept finding listeners since. A 7-inch single pairing "Clan in Da Front" with "Wu-Tang: 7th Chamber" came out on Get On Down Records in December 2017.

Why Do Old Hip-Hop Songs Keep Coming Back?

Songs from the early 90s often find new listeners long after release. Sometimes a trend drives it. Sometimes people just go looking.

For "7th Chamber," we can't say which one it is. We can say the song is still easy to stream, and the numbers show people haven't stopped.

(More: another 90s hip-hop icon who is back in the news. And: how a viral dance gave an older song new life.)
