The Video Vanguard Award is MTV's biggest lifetime honor for artists who have shaped music video as an art form.

Nirvana is the 9th band to receive the Video Vanguard Award, counting groups only. Solo artists have also won the award, but Nirvana is the first group to take it since Duran Duran in 2003, a gap of 23 years.

Chuck D of Public Enemy presented the award. He was chosen because Public Enemy was reshaping hip-hop around the same time Nirvana was transforming rock in the early 1990s.

How Nirvana Changed Rock Music

Nirvana formed in Aberdeen, Washington in 1987, started by Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic. Dave Grohl joined on drums in 1990, completing the lineup most people know.

Their debut album, Bleach, came out in 1989 on the independent label Sub Pop. It built a following in the underground rock scene but didn't cross over.

Nevermind did. Released in September 1991 after the band signed to major label DGC Records, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" hit MTV and shifted the conversation almost overnight. The polished hair metal that had dominated rock radio in the late 1980s gave way to raw distortion and unguarded lyrics. Alternative rock was suddenly mainstream.

Their third album, In Utero, arrived in September 1993. Produced by Steve Albini, it was rawer and more abrasive than Nevermind on purpose. It's now considered one of the defining albums of the grunge era.

Cobain died in April 1994. Nirvana had existed for under a decade. In that time, they sold over 75 million records worldwide, reshaped what rock could sound like, and opened the door for a generation of alternative and indie artists. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.

After Cobain's death, Dave Grohl has said he considered leaving music entirely. A chance encounter with a hitchhiker wearing a Cobain T-shirt changed his mind. He started Foo Fighters in 1995.
